Here we see how science and art go hand in hand very closely. Dye is added to the water surface, and a wooden stick is used to manipulate the colors into designs and patterns. Once your kid has completed this one-of-a-kind “painting” process, a sheet of paper is carefully placed on top  to transfer the image.

The colors don’t mix with water and stay on the surface - surface tension. This is a tendency of fluid surfaces to shrink to the minimum surface area possible. Surface tension allows insects (e.g. water striders), that are denser than water, to float and slide on the water surface.
